Beye Offers Magpies Warning Saturday 9th May 2009
Newcastle United defender Habib Beye has said that the club must avoid relegation at all costs ahead of their crucial six-pointer with Middlesbrough on Monday.
The Magpies are in a perilous position in the Premier League and the Senegal international is desperate to give the fans something to cheer about come the end of the season.
Alan Shearer’s side currently occupy 18th place and are three points behind Hull in 17th with three games to go.
Former Marseille man Beye has targeted a win on Monday against Boro to kick-start a miraculous great-escape.
But time is quick running out for the Magpies and even if they claim all three points against Boro they will be keeping an eye on other results in the league.
Hull host Stoke at the KC Stadium this weekend while fellow relegation threatened side Sunderland travel to Bolton in search of a win.
While Newcastle might be expected to bounce straight back to the Premier League if relegated, it won’t be an easy task. Sides that have been relegated in recent years such as Charlton, Norwich and Leeds United have been relegated into the third tier of English football relatively quickly after dropping out of the Premier League.
Beye said: “We are one of the biggest clubs in England and we cannot drop into the Championship.
“We as players have a responsibility and must take that responsibility.
“The reality is that we’re in the bottom three, and if the season ended now, then we’d be relegated.
“We have a big game on Monday and I think we have the responsibility to win this game.”
Fantasy Stakes players who watched Newcastle get thrashed 3-0 at Liverpool last weekend will not be too quick to put 31-year-old Beye in their side.
But the full-back has played 21 times in the league so far this campaign and is regarded on Tyneside as one of the few players who has performed well.
