Toffees Sticking Together Friday 8th May 2009
Everton full-back Leighton Baines believes that his partnership with team mate Steven Pienaar has allowed both players to find top form.
Baines and Pienaar have played together along the left flank for Everton this season and have formed an excellent understanding on the pitch.
The Toffees currently occupy sixth place in the Premier League and are trying to gun down Aston Villa to pip them to fifth.
Baines believes his relationship with South African Pienaar has greatly aided the team so far this campaign and he hopes to keep it going when the Blues take on Spurs tomorrow.
“We have an understanding with each other and he helps me out defensively, he tracks back and works hard,” he said
“Going the other way I’ll run past him and create a bit of space.
“He’s got such fantastic ability that if he gets that space he’s not going to lose the ball.
“He will pick out a pass or will beat somebody, he’s always productive so I think we have a good understanding at the moment down our side and Steven is someone I absolutely love playing with.”
Twenty-four year old Baines has made 28 appearances in the league for Everton this season while 27-year-old Pienaar has played 25 times.
The Liverpool born defender and his team also have an FA Cup final against Chelsea to look forward to.
Fantasy Stakes players may want to pick Baines for the end of season run-in but they should be aware that he faces nippy right-winger Aaron Lennon tomorrow when Everton play Tottenham.
But the young defender is hoping that he can keep Lennon at bay throughout the match. He said: “I think it’s important that you do your defensive job as best you can and then hopefully cause him a few problems as well going the other way.”
