Torres and Gerrard to Miss Start of Season? Wednesday 12th August 2009
England take on Holland this evening in a friendly game in Amsterdam, however do not let the “friendly” tag make you think it will be a simple walk in the park.
There is a big rivalry between the two nations and the game will be highly competitive, giving all you Fantasy Stakes managers a great chance to see what shape some of the Premiership’s biggest players are in.
There are a few noticeable absentees from the line up, including Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, Theo Walcott and United keeper Ben Foster, all of whom have minor injuries and are hoping to be fit for the kick off to the new season.
Rafa Benitez has already expressed his concern on Gerrard possibly missing out on opening weekend.
England boss Capello is aware of the importance of the weekend fixtures, so has vowed to use all his substitutes so no player is risked. Good news for everyone playing Fantasy Stakes, as this tactic reduces the number of possible injuries for the 1st round, plus you get to scout an extra 6 players.
There are several players for all you budding FS managers to keep an eye on. Ashley Young had a great season for Villa in 08/09 and he will be looking to impress on the international stage. Tonight will allow us to see how sharp and fit the young winger is and with the Villains playing Wigan at home on Saturday, he may well find his way into your team.
Two key players will find themselves in the heart of the England defence, Terry and Ferdinand, both of whom are in strong contention for inclusion in any Fantasy Stakes team. Fingers crossed no injuries here, as they can bring in some good clean sheet points.
Liverpool and Arsenal will also be keeping an eye on the opposition as Dirk Kuyt and Van Persie are likely to line up for The Netherlands.
Elsewhere Fernando Torres has had a busy summer and will be working again tonight for Spain against Macedonia. He has played a number games for Spain and Liverpool during the off season and there are reports of the Spaniard experiencing fatigue.
Make sure you keep up to date with all the injuries, as you may have to make some tactical changes to your FS teams. (which you can do until 11.45am on Saturday!)
