Villa Sign Ashley Young Replacement Wednesday 15th July 2009
With increased speculation about Ashley Young’s movement away from Villa Park, have Aston Villa covered themselves for the possibility of losing their star wingman.
The signing of Stuart Downing, for £12 million from relegated Middlesbrough, could well be the sign of Young being tempted to another club.
Big teams including Manchester United, Chelsea and Spurs are keen on securing Young’s signature before the start of the new season, as the player has developed rapidly over the past couple of seasons with the Villains. He has proved his attacking skill and goal making ability, as well as a good goal scoring record.
Martin O’Neill labelled Young’s performance against Everton last season as “world-class stuff from a world-class player” and this has attracted the big clubs in English football.
Is Downing, however, suitable cover for such a talented winger?
Fantasy Stakes managers will be keen to note that Stuart appeared in 37 of the 38 league games Middlesbrough played last season, making him one of the most reliable picks in the Premier League.
With him now playing for Aston Villa and his proven ability down the wing, Fantasy Stakers will have to seriously consider selecting him in their midfield line up.
In front of goal Downing has been less convincing recently, scoring just 2 goals in a total of 42 appearances last season, none of which occurred in league matches. Do not judge his abilities by this stat alone, the season before he scored 10 goals and he creates countless chances for others.
Being surrounded by a stronger and more talented team at Villa will only encourage him to play at his best and display the qualities which have earned him England call ups in the past.
Villa play Wigan on the opening day of the season and with Downing likely to be priced around the £7m mark, he could well be a perfect pick for anyone’s team. Stakesy is certainly going to keep an eye on him!
