Toffees Look For Howard Back-up Monday 29th June 2009
Everton are on the hunt for a new goalkeeper and Peterborough’s Joe Lewis is reportedly their number one target.
The England Under-21 stopper has been getting rave reviews of late and is expected to move to a top-flight club in the near future.
Everton manager David Moyes has apparently contacted the London Road club in a bid to try and bring the youngster to Goodison Park.
Moyes sees Lewis as the ideal understudy to current goalkeeper Tim Howard. The 30-year-old American played in every Premier League game for the Toffees last season and Fantasy Stakes players will know that he was an excellent points earner last term.
But while the Everton boss is keen for Lewis to be tutored by Howard, Peterborough director of football Barry Fry has denied that an approach has been made.
He said: “I’ve had no conversation with Everton or any other club about Joe which is a surprise because he is forever being linked with Premier League teams.
“He’s certainly good enough to play at that level, but there is no question of us wanting to sell him. He’s a big part of what we are trying to achieve here.
“Joe has a big reputation in the game and playing for England can only improve that.”
All eyes will be on Lewis during the final of the European under-21 Championships tonight, and Moyes will be hoping that other interested parties decide against putting in a bid for the ‘keeper.
However, fantasy football players should expect to see Lewis in the Premiership sooner rather than later.
