Rovers Desperate For New Striker Monday 22nd June 2009
Blackburn Rovers fans were dealt a severe blow today with the news that Roque Santa Cruz is having a medical with Manchester City.
The 27-year-old has an £18 million buy-out clause in his contract at Ewood Park and has decided that his future lies at Eastlands.
Manager Sam Allardyce will be looking to replace Santa Cruz, although an approach for Bolton forward Kevin Davies has initially been rebuffed by Wanderers.
Fantasy Stakes players will know that Davies used to play for Blackburn, and Allardyce will be doing everything in his power to persuade his former player to join Rovers.
With Matt Derbyshire set to join Greek side Olympiakos after a successful loan spell, Blackburn fans will be hoping they can get someone through the door sooner rather than later.
But fantasy football players will know that Rovers managed to cope without a prolific striker for much of last season.
Paraguay international Santa Cruz had an extremely disjointed campaign after suffering a knee injury.
He only scored four times in 20 games last term and Blackburn had to rely on other players to find the back of the net.
However, big target-man Kevin Davies would surely bolster their attack and fit in nicely with Sam Allardyce’s direct style of play.
Davies played in every Premier League game for Bolton last time out and netted 12 goals in the process. Blackburn fans would love to see the 32-year-old produce a similar return for their side next season.
During the 1998/99 campaign, Davies only scored one goal for Rovers in 24 games – the big striker may want to right the wrongs of that particular season and prove himself to the Ewood Park faithful.
