Is Pirlo another Deco? Friday 19th June 2009
AC Milan midfielder Andrea Pirlo has been linked with a move to Chelsea but it remains to be seen whether he can adapt to the style of English football.
Italy international Pirlo may follow former manager Carlo Ancelotti to Stamford Bridge, although recent reports have suggested that a move is far from decided.
Fantasy Stakes players will know that many players in the past have failed to adapt to life in the Premier League and experts have argued that Pirlo’s style of play wouldn’t be suited to the fast-pace tempo in England.
The 30-year-old has bags of experience and is widely considered as one of the best passers in the game, but Chelsea fans are split on whether he is the right man to slot into their midfield.
Portugal international Deco joined the Blues at the beginning of last season but couldn’t adapt to life in the Premier League.
He wasn’t a complete flop, however. The 31-year-old found the back of the net three times in 24 league games but has not enjoyed his time at Stamford Bridge.
But with Deco likely to be reunited with Jose Mourinho at Inter Milan this summer, could Pirlo be leaving Inter’s arch-rivals and heading for Chelsea?
According to Milan’s general director Adriano Galliani, Pirlo is going nowhere. He said: “We have not received any offers for him.
“But if we did, we would return them to the sender. He (Pirlo) will remain at Milan, 99.99 per cent.”
Many fantasy football players will be licking their lips at the thought of Pirlo coming to the Premier League and will be hoping a deal can be done.
But Chelsea fans can be forgiven if they don’t believe the 30-year-old will be the answer to all their problems.
If the transfer goes through, the Italian will have to prove himself and fight against scepticism from the off.
