Sagna Vs Eboue Wednesday 17th June 2009
Arsenal may be on the hunt for a new right-back in the off-season if Bacary Sagna and Emmanuel Eboue decide to leave the club.
Both players have been linked with a move away from the Emirates which could leave the Gunners’ defence in crisis.
A number of clubs including Real Madrid are reportedly interested in Sagna, who was Arsene Wenger’s first-choice right-back last season.
Twenty-six-year-old Sagna was an integral part of Wenger’s side and made 35 appearances in the Premier League last term.
Fantasy Stakes players will know that Eboue on the other hand didn’t enjoy the best of campaigns in North London.
The Ivory Coast international played 28 league games for the Gunners although he was booed off the pitch during a game at the Emirates in December.
Eboue came off the bench in the game against Wigan only to put in a dreadful performance and be taken off.
And the 26-year-old was frustrated at the lack of first-team football last term. He said: “It would be hard but I think it would be harder to experience another season like this one.
“In any case, if I leave Arsenal it would be for another league because it is out of the question that I develop elsewhere in England.”
Arsenal fans were frustrated by Eboue last season and many regard Sagna as a much more important player.
However, if Spanish giants Madrid come knocking with a substantial offer then it will be interesting to see whether the Gunners have the resolve to reject a bid.
With Glen Johnson on the cusp of a move to Liverpool, fantasy football players will know that good right-backs are hard to come by and can often play a major part in their team’s fortunes.
