Johnson Set for Liverpool Tuesday 16th June 2009
England right-back Glen Johnson appears set to join Liverpool after snubbing a move back to Chelsea.
The Portsmouth full-back has caught the eye of Reds boss Rafael Benitez and new Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti as they look to improve their squads for next season.
Johnson was one of Pompey’s best performers last term and Fantasy Stakes players will know that he can be a valuable player again in the Premier League next season.
The 24-year-old played 29 league games for the Fratton Park outfit in 2008-09 and scored three times in the process.
Johnson has recently established himself as England’s number one right-back and a move to a top-four club might ensure his place in Fabio Capello’s side next summer.
And Portsmouth chief executive Peter Storrie is resigned to losing another good player.
He said: “Glen has obviously had a fantastic season for us and has established himself as one of the best right-backs in the league if not the country at the moment.
“I’ve known Glen for a long time since his West Ham days so when I re-signed him we talked it over and he asked if one of the big four clubs, who were in the Champions League, came in for him would we stand in his way of a move.
“I said that I couldn’t do that, provided the deal is good for Portsmouth and for Glen.”
The price-tag for Johnson is rumoured to be between £15m and £20m – Chelsea signed the full-back for £6m in 2003 and a return to Stamford Bridge could result in Jose Bosingwa being shown the exit door.
