Sunderland Set for Overhaul Monday 15th June 2009
New Sunderland manager Steve Bruce is set to bring in a number of players this summer as he overhauls the squad on Wearside.
The former Wigan boss is expected to spend big in the transfer window as Sunderland try to improve their league position next season.
Fantasy Stakes players will know that the Black Cats only just managed to avoid relegation from the Premier League last term and they will be looking for a much steadier run in the new campaign.
Bruce is reportedly interested in bringing Wigan midfielder Lee Cattermole to the Stadium of Light as he looks to put his own spin on a side that needs big changes.
Cattermole, who played 33 times in the Premier League last season, could well be tempted by a reunion with Steve Bruce and could prove a very useful addition to the Sunderland squad.
Two other players linked with a move are Manchester City’s Richard Dunne and much maligned Tottenham striker Darren Bent.
Bruce has a good track record of getting the best out of players and he unearthed two gems at Wigan in the form of Antonio Valencia and Wilson Palacios.
The 48-year-old has stated that he would be more than happy if he could achieve the same result on Wearside as he did at the Latics.
“The aim is to take the progression forward, we don’t want to be flirting with relegation,” he said on his appointment.
“To get up to 10th where Wigan were would be a huge improvement.”
Fantasy football players will have to keep en eye on movements at Sunderland over the summer as they look to be a force next season.
Bruce will be looking to bolster his squad with some solid established Premier League players and his current squad will have to prove they have a future at the club.
