Berbatov Relishing Ronaldo Exit Thursday 11th June 2009
Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo will not be at Old Trafford much longer after the Red Devils accepted a world record £80m offer from Real Madrid.
But one player who may be happy at his exit is Bulgaria international Dimitar Berbatov.
The 28-year-old has not enjoyed the best of seasons in his first campaign at Old Trafford and could benefit from Ronaldo’s move.
Fantasy Stakes players will know that the Bulgarian was a phenomenal force during his time at Tottenham, but didn’t carry his old form into last season.
Pundits argue that Berbatov enjoys being the big fish in a little pond and the number of big personalities and egos in the United squad has caused a dip in form.
He found the back of the net nine times in 32 Premier League games last term and Sir Alex Ferguson will be hoping he can significantly improve that return in the 2009/10 campaign.
Berbatov may blossom in the absence of Ronaldo, whose petulance at times overshadowed the team ethos that Ferguson has relied upon throughout his managerial career.
The United boss may now decide to build his team around Berbatov as he looks to spend the whopping £80m transfer fee on new players.
A spokesman for the Glazer family, owners of Manchester United, said the decision to let Ronaldo go was purely a football decision and had nothing to do with the financial structure of the club.
If the money goes straight into Ferguson’s transfer kitty then United could still be a force to be reckoned with in the league next season.
The future of Carlos Tevez has yet to be decided, and the likes of attacking midfielders Frank Ribery and Antonio Valencia have been linked with a move to Old Trafford.
Fantasy football players may witness a United summer spending spree that centres around a team with Berbatov as the spearhead.
