Drogba to Leave Chelsea? Monday 1st June 2009
Chelsea have today appointed new manager Carlo Ancelotti as the successor to caretaker boss Guus Hiddink and big changes are expected at Stamford Bridge.
The 49-year-old left AC Milan after eight seasons with the Rossoneri and is looking forward to the new challenge in the Premier League.
But Fantasy Stakes players should note that when the season re-starts in August it could well be a very different Chelsea side that takes to the park to the one currently on show.
Ancelotti, who speaks little English, has said that he will be looking to build a side that thrives on team spirit and has excellent discipline.
This could mean the end of the road for controversial striker Didier Drogba whose career at the Bridge has had many troubles in recent times. The 31-year-old only found the back of the net five times in the league last season after an acrimonious relationship with former Blues manager Luiz Felipe Scolari.
Drogba’s performances dramatically picked up under Guus Hiddink, sparking criticism and pundits citied a lack of professionalism in the early stages of the campaign.
It will be interesting to see if the Ivorian fits into Ancelotti’s new-look Chelsea side, where any player-petulance may be stamped out.
The new manager said: “I believe in teamwork. It is the most important thing to create a group that work together to build a dream.
“The players must have a strong organisation and strong discipline and strong motivation. I hope to do this the right way to arrive at success.
“I like the Premier League because there are great teams and they play good football. Now there are more tactical matches and very speedy, I like this football.”
Drogba has often been linked with a move to Inter Milan where he would be reunited with former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho.
Fantasy Stakes players will have to keep an eye on transfer comings and goings at the Bridge as Ancelotti tries to build a team capable of winning the Premier League next season.
