Torres for Golden Boot Next Season? Friday 29th May 2009
Liverpool striker Fernando Torres has had a frustrating season with injury this term but will be ready to go again when the Premiership re-starts in August.
Fantasy Stakes players will know that Torres is a phenomenal talent but he was not able to help Liverpool to the Premier League title.
The Spain international has been hampered by ankle and hamstring problems and the Anfield faithful have not enjoyed seeing their star striker sat in the stands.
But loyal Kopites will be delighted to hear the news that the 25-year-old has now signed a contract extension to stay on Merseyside until 2014.
Torres still had four years left on his existing contract but Liverpool offered him improved terms and the option to stay for another season.
When fit, Torres is one of the highest earners in fantasy football terms and his new contract will reflect his prowess in front of goal.
Manager Rafael Benitez said: “Fernando is one of the best strikers in the game today and, at his age, can only get better.
“Every major side would want him in their team, but he has shown how much he wants to achieve success at Liverpool by committing his future to the club.
“We are building something special here and securing such important players on long-term deals means we can move forward with confidence. This sends out a very positive message to everyone connected with the club.”
The man bought from Athletico Madrid has only played 24 times in the Premier League this season but has still found the back of the net 14 times.
Last season the Spaniard scored 24 times in 33 games and Liverpool fans will be hoping he can avoid injury and produce a similar return next term.
Fantasy Stakes players should also keep an eye on his fitness as he is a player sure to rake in the points when on form – and a real contender for top goal scorer if he remains fit.
