Lennon too Good for Bentley Sunday 24th May 2009
Tottenham Hotspur’s David Bentley has been in the shadow of team-mate Aaron Lennon this season and is considering his future at White Hart Lane.
At the start of the campaign Bentley was tipped for great things in North London but Fantasy Stakes players who picked him have been disappointed at his performances.
The 24-year-old was signed for £15 million from Blackburn last July but has failed to get a run in the first team.
The former Arsenal trainee has played 24 times for the club but hasn’t made an appearance since February. New manager Harry Redknapp has favoured Aaron Lennon on the right side of the Spurs midfield and Bentley has been left in the shadows.
Redknapp stands by his team selections and says it might be time for Bentley to move to pastures new.
He said: “David’s going to look at it and think ‘hang on, I’m not getting in the team even when Aaron Lennon’s not fit. Maybe it is time I moved on’.”
Former Leeds winger Lennon has been in great form this season despite not enjoying the best of campaigns last term.
He has played 35 times in the Premier League this season and found the back of the net five times – with such an excellent return it is hard to see if Bentley has a future at White Hart Lane while Harry Redknapp is at the helm.
Tottenham travel to Anfield this afternoon looking to end the season on a high. After a dismal start to the campaign Spurs fans will just be glad that they have pulled themselves out of the relegation dogfight that has taken over the North-East.
