Lampard the Cream of the Crop Friday 22nd May 2009
Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard has had another fantastic season and Fantasy Stakes players without him in their side have suffered badly this term.
Lampard is the highest points scorer in the current Fantasy Stakes season, ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo, Dirk Kuyt, Pepe Reina and Steven Gerrard.
Barring a miraculous performance from any of his challengers, the England international will be crowned top points scorer when the season ends on Sunday.
Chelsea haven’t had the strongest of campaigns after their bad start under Brazilian manager Luiz Felipe Scolari – the Blues are in the final of the FA Cup but they lost out in the semi-finals of the Champions League and are certain to finish third in the Premiership.
But while the team hasn’t consistently performed this term, Lampard has been an ever-present – being one of a select bunch of players to have played in every league game so far.
The 30-year-old has bagged 12 goals in the Premier League and recently won Chelsea’s Player of the Year award for a record third time.
On winning the prize, Lampard said: “It feels great because of the amount of top-quality players who have won this award.
“When I came here I never expected to win it three times at all. I just wanted to establish myself. I am absolutely delighted.”
Transfer speculation always surrounds the midfielder during the off-season but Lampard has always stayed loyal to Chelsea.
The Blues travel to the Stadium of Light on Sunday and may have a big say in the relegation dogfight at the bottom of the Premier League.
Sunderland will be desperately scrapping to avoid the drop but few would bet against Frank Lampard to come up with a goal or an assist.
Fantasy football players weighing up possible transfers for the last time this season could see the midfielder as a big threat to the Black Cats defence.
