Champions May Relegate Magpies Sunday 17th May 2009
Manchester United won the Premier League title for the third time in a row yesterday and could rest players for their final game against Hull.
Newcastle lost out to Fulham and slipped back into the relegation zone – the Magpies will be hoping that United field a full-strength side against Hull next weekend as they strive to escape the drop.
A point for Alan Shearer’s side against Aston Villa will give them a chance of survival as long as United can do them a favour at the KC Stadium.
But the Red Devils play in the Champions League Final three days after the Hull clash and Sir Alex Ferguson may decide to give his second-string players a chance.
Two players that could make a massive difference are Cristiano Ronaldo and Nemanja Vidic. Vidic is the Fantasy Stakes best defender with 21 clean sheets and more than 100 points to his name.
Portugal international Ronaldo has also been raking in the points for Fantasy Stakes. The attacker has scored 18 goals this season making him the highest points scorer.
Hull manager Phil Brown will be hoping these stars are rested but isn’t expecting an easy game.
He said: “There will be suggestions of weakened sides coming our way but as we have seen against Bolton, nobody does you any favours in the Premier League.
“We could quite easily name two or three teams Sir Alex Ferguson could put out. That is the ability of that football club.”
Newcastle had looked like avoiding the drop after a win against Middlesbrough last weekend but the result against Fulham means Magpies fans are in for a nervy last day of the campaign.
