Ronaldo to Win the League for United? Friday 15th May 2009
Manchester United only need one point from their last two games to be crowned Premier League champions and star player Cristiano Ronaldo will be looking to seal the deal against Arsenal tomorrow.
The Red Devils take on the Gunners at Old Trafford knowing that a draw will be enough to secure the title, but Sir Alex Ferguson’s side will want to celebrate in style with a win.
Ronaldo scored twice against Arsenal when the sides recently met in the Champions League semi-finals and will be hoping he can get his name on the scoresheet tomorrow.
The Portugal international has once again been a major player for United this season and has racked up some impressive Fantasy Stakes points.
He is the second top overall points scorer this season with 208 to his name – only Chelsea’s Frank Lampard can boast a better tally.
But where Lampard picks up more points for assists, Ronaldo is sitting pretty in the season’s goal points list with 108 (18 goals) – 18 more points than his nearest challenger Steven Gerrard.
Few would bet against Ronaldo scoring against Arsenal tomorrow and securing a successive Premiership title for Manchester United.
If United retain the league trophy then it will be the first time a club has done so six times – they will also equal Liverpool’s record of 18 English top-flight titles.
The Red Devils scraped a 2-1 win at Wigan during the week thanks to a fine goal from Michael Carrick and Ferguson admits that he may have to change the team around.
He said: “I will freshen up the team from Wednesday because it was a really gruelling game on a very heavy pitch.”
Unfortunately for United fans Rio Ferdinand will miss the game, but if Ronaldo is firing on all cylinders then Arsenal will certainly be up against it.
